The exhibition in the “Excavation Museum” is arranged in two main spaces: an oblong showcase and an enclosed gallery with tempered glass walls that facilitate the view of the archaeological excavation.

The 1150 exhibits included overall are divided into two large units with further sub-sections.

The first unit relates to the area’s distant past, before its integration to the fortified part of the city in 480 BC. The exhibits trace the domestic and workshop activities, but also the burial practices of previous inhabitants. They follow their course towards creating the city-state of Athens and their life at the outskirts of the older city.

The second, larger unit refers to the neighbourhood after its integration to the city’s urban web. A great variety of objects showcases aspects of the daily life of the inhabitants: the organisation of households, the activities of men, women and children, the way they communicated and interacted with each other, and the places they lived and worked.

The unit is completed in the enclosed gallery. Here, artefacts mostly relate to the spiritual life of the inhabitants: the gods they worshipped, their faith and beliefs, their worries and expectations, their philosophical and aesthetic pursuits.
